This past weekend at the Dallas K9 Trial in Kaufman, Texas, Kelli Sams Heathman and her dog Koning represented the Top Dog PSA Club with unmatched determination and skill, earning their PSA Level 2 title! Even more impressive? They were the only Level 2 team to pass all weekend – a testament to their preparation and focus.
7th PSA2 Team for Top Dog PSA
With this victory, Kelli and Koning become the 7th team from Top Dog PSA to earn a PSA2 title – continuing the club’s incredible legacy within the Protection Sports Association (PSA) community. Each milestone like this raises the bar for what’s possible, especially when achieved by handlers with no prior professional training experience.
A Journey That Started in 2021
Kelli’s PSA journey with Koning began back in 2021, when they first stepped onto the trial field together. Their debut resulted in earning their PDC in Florida – a memorable start that launched their trajectory in the sport. Just nine months later, they returned to the trial field in Carrollton, TX, where they crushed a back-to-back PSA1 title performance.
The Challenge of Level 2
After their PSA1 success, Kelli wasted no time and dove headfirst into preparing for PSA Level 2. Their first attempt came late in the 2023 season, where Koning served up a humbling reminder during the call-off routine – a part of PSA2 known to test even the most seasoned teams.
Rather than step back, Kelli doubled down on training. She dedicated herself to fine-tuning their work, taking time away from trialing to focus on the nuances of the Level 2 routines.
Late 2024 – First PSA2 Leg Secured
Her efforts paid off in late 2024 when the team earned their first PSA2 leg in Canyon, TX, collecting not just points but also some impressive trial hardware. Their momentum was building.
Victory at Dallas K9 Trial – PSA2 Complete!
Returning to the trial field this weekend, Kelli and Koning were stronger, sharper, and more prepared than ever. That focus and dedication showed as they successfully passed their second PSA2 leg, officially earning their PSA2 title!
This moment marks a significant chapter not only in Kelli and Koning’s journey but in the legacy of the Top Dog PSA Club.
No Professional Background – Just Pure Commitment
One of the most inspiring parts of Kelli’s journey? She had no prior professional handling or dog training experience before stepping into the PSA world. Her success speaks volumes about what commitment, consistency, and community support can achieve.
Community Support and Gratitude
A heartfelt thanks goes out to Khoi Pham and the K9 Working Dogs of Dallas Club for their invaluable support. By welcoming Kelli into their training group, providing new environments, and offering access to diverse decoy experiences, they’ve played a vital role in helping this team grow.
What’s Next for Kelli & Koning?
With PSA2 in the books, there’s no doubt Kelli and Koning have even more to accomplish. Her passion and perseverance are a beacon to others in the sport, especially those just starting out.
Kelli, you’re an inspiration and a vital part of the Top Dog PSA family. Huge congratulations – we can’t wait to see what comes next!
